Junior Athlete Pathway

Muaythai NSW Junior Development Day Events are designed to be safe, controlled, and development-focused for participants aged 6–13 years. All junior matches are conducted with no head contact and an emphasis on control over power. Full rules list and how events are conducted please read HERE

Our juniors start from 6 years old and we emphasis controlled contact (full ruleset list below), positive feedback to our young Athletes and good sportsmanlike conduct is a must from Athletes, Parents and Coaches alike. We support the SHOOSH initiative by Sports NSW, click HERE to read. 

Any child that is 14 years and above needs to register for senior Amatuer series events and CSA.

Juniors just need a MNSW individual membership and their Gym will need to be a current MTA-NSW clubs which will cover their entry for all our NSW junior events (no CSA registration required). On first sign ups they will also recieve a MNSW singlet and Shorts, to sign up click HERE

Rules and bout length for age brackets

Ages 6–8 Years
• Rounds: 3 × 1-minute rounds (30-second breaks)
• Striking allowed: body/chest armour only, below the shoulder line and above the waist
• Not allowed: head contact, elbows, clinch throws, dumps, takedowns, trips, or sweeps
• Gloves: 6oz–8oz
• Focus: safety, movement, and basic technique

Ages 8–10 Years
• Rounds: 3 × 1-minute rounds (30-second breaks)
• Striking allowed: body and legs only, below the shoulder line
• Not allowed: head contact, elbows, clinch throws, dumps, takedowns, trips, or sweeps
• Gloves: 10oz
• Focus: control, balance, and skill development

Ages 10–12 Years
• Rounds: 3 × 90-second rounds (30-second breaks)
• Striking allowed: body and legs only, below the shoulder line
• Not allowed: head contact, elbows, clinch throws, dumps, takedowns, trips, or sweeps
• Gloves: 10oz
• Focus: technique, composure, and controlled exchanges

Ages 12–13 Years
• Rounds: 3 × 90-second rounds (30-second breaks)
• Striking allowed: body and legs only, below the shoulder line
• Additional techniques: controlled clinch throws and dumps permitted
• Not allowed: head contact, elbows
• Gloves: 10oz
• Focus: safe progression and preparation for future pathways

Important (All Ages)
• No head contact permitted at any junior level
• Knees to the body are allowed
• Matches judged on control and safety
• Weight cutting is not permitted
• Referees may stop or modify matches at any time for safety reasons
