Prohibited Substances and Methods
Some drugs, medications, substances and methods are banned in sports. Athletes competing in sports governed by a World Anti-Doping Code-compliant anti-doping policy need to be aware that they can’t just take any drug or medication, or even use certain methods.
WADA runs a consultation period through its List Expert Group and Health, Medical and Research Committee before preparing and publishing the Prohibited List. The Prohibited List is updated and published by WADA each year and is the International Standard that outlines:
- The substances and methods that are prohibited in and out of competition.
- The sports in which the substances and methods are prohibited.
It is important to note that not all prohibited substances are specifically named in the Prohibited List. For a complete check if a substance is prohibited, head to the check your substances online resource (administered by Global DRO).
If you have any questions about prohibited substances or methods, contact Sport Integrity Australia by calling: 1300 027 232 or via email: substance.enquiries@sportintegrity.gov.au
Testing & Whereabouts
A Sport Integrity Australia official (or an accredited official acting on behalf of Sport Integrity Australia) may require you to provide a sample at any time and at any place. Athletes who are part of the Registered and National Testing Pool need to tell SIA where they are going to be, at specific times, so no-advance notice testing can be performed. SIA can test either in-competition or out-of-competition. Testing can take place at an athlete’s training venue or home address. Testing with no advance notice and sample collection can include the collection of urine, blood or both.
SIA doping control program complies with the following:
- World-Anti-Doping Code
- International Standard for Testing and Investigation (ISTI)
- Sport Integrity Australia Act 2020
- Sport Integrity Australia Regulations 2020 including the National Anti‑Doping (NAD) scheme.

Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE)
Athletes may at times need to use a prohibited medication and/or method to treat a legitimate medical condition. A Therapeutic Use Exemption is an exemption that allows an athlete to use, for therapeutic purposes only, an otherwise prohibited substance or method (of administering a substance).
Under the World Anti-Doping Code–International Standard-Therapeutic Use Exemptions (2023) an athlete may be granted a Therapeutic Use Exemption if (and only if) they can show, on the balance of probabilities, that certain conditions are met.
